The area teams with wildlife! From the sunroom I've seen deer as close as 15 feet, lots of squirrels, quail, bobcats, fox (actually have a picture of one taken under a spotlight at night) and of course the lowly skunks and opossums but they've never created any problems. The birds are there in droves at times. I've seen flocks of red-winged blackbirds that would number a hundred or so, the bluebirds are amazing when you watch a flock of twenty plus as they fly through in their search for a meal, cardinals are always there and especially nice to see their bright red colors on a dull winter day. Hummingbirds are plentiful during the warmer months and keep both feeders drained often. Goldfinches make the FTC home year round. The wild turkeys are just amazing to see as a flock of 10-15 passes through feeding on either deer corn or bugs depending on the season, but they are very common and come unbelievably close to the cottage. It truly is amazing to spend some quiet time there and just enjoy all the critters. You're sure to see something at anytime of the year.
Spring is awesome when the first blooms appear in the forest and the wildflowers start opening up for a new year. Fall is just breathtaking with the vivid colors splashed with green. The mountains look like paintings on canvas! Summer is tolerable for Arkansas, the air conditioner rarely needs to run and only during a couple of month span. The elevations and ever present breeze keeps the temperatures about 10 or so degrees cooler than the Arkansas river valley. Winter is something to experience at the FTC. I have been fortunate enough to get snowed in, only for a couple days since the highway department is pretty fast getting the roads cleared. But the 6-8 inches of snow can and do create snowdrifts that can be as deep as three feet. It is just fabulous to be there to experience and witness it!
